Why did they name it Russian Hill?

6 Sep 2017 7:41pm

@Curly: There was a small Russian Cemetery atop the hill - dating back to the Gold Rush. The cemetery was eventually moved but the name stuck. There was not much of a Russian presence here in the 19th century but just to the north - there was a well developed Russian fur trade which ran from Alaska to within 100 km of The Golden Gate. The Russian River is a popular resort area less than two hour's drive above San Francisco.
