The Queen Swan

San Francisco

What else would you call a nesting female swan at the 'Palace' of Fine Arts. Three nearby barking dogs brought her to my attention. Though just a few feet away - she seemed completely indifferent to their commotion. Still, I was amazed that she let me get this close. I had my trusty 16-35mm lens on the camera and had it at its maximum focal length. Still, at 35mm - you can imagine how close I was to her as I made this and several other captures. She never seemed the least bit concerned about my presence. I am guessing that is her mate, preening feathers nearby. He never came up from the down.

I hate to accuse these birds of being lazy - but this nest was clearly just some tan-bark pushed into a mound. Instant nest. But probably as warm and comfy as any ever devised. Worthy - of a queen.

A fine capture, many swans can be very defensive about their territory, you did well.

I 'work' with swans and they are wonderful to try understand . . this season, we provided a bundle of of selected twigs to assist in the nest-building and our local swans used the bundle itself ! 'That'll do nicely", they said !
