Sunset Celebration

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 6 April 2011 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

A container ship (center/at setting sun) is departing Oakland's Middle Harbor and is bound for sea. This image was taken two days ago from along the promenade at Jack London Square. My apartment is just 3 blocks to the right from this spot. I love strolling along this stretch of walkway.

This body of water is the Oakland Estuary which separates Oakland from the island of Alameda across the way. We will explore this area more in the coming days.

I just wanted to express my gratitude for being here today. This is the 41st anniversary of my arriving in California for the first time - April 6, 1970. I arrived here with my roommate and friend Allen Duncan. We were on a 3 week vacation out of our home in Arlington, Virginia. Allen stayed here three years before taking a job in Connecticut. I never left. Allen passed away several years ago. Today, I will reflect on Allen's life and on the joy he brought to those who knew him. I'll have to call Bridget. She met Allen and I on the day we arrived - and is still a good friend.

And so it goes...

Thanks again for the larger image to appreciate, not sure how I feel about this one, it's a bit strange. By that I mean, it's a great sunset scene but it confuses my brain with the amount of cool blue tones around the water and the foreground. I feel like injecting some warmth into it, but that may then betray what you saw in front of you.

This is a great scene to convey your story Stephen! A story that is really touching. I hope that this gave you some comfort. The mixture of the sunlight blended with the blue coolness of the water seems to reflect the moment in time for you as you reminisced, smiled, and perhaps shed a tear... Peace

I hope all of your thoughts are gentle, Stephen. A very touching story, and you've used your photography in a very fitting way, here. (I think if I lived three blocks from this spot, I'd be there all of the time!)
