Port Costa at Day's End

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 1 March 2011 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

A small but historic town along The Carqiunez Strait - California

This photograph was taken from the end of the old rail pier in Benicia. I was just about to breakdown the tripod when I heard the train whistle echoing through the walls of the strait. Sure enough, after another minute or so it came into view.

Hmmm, tips the the right a bit. Don't you hate nit pickers? :) It's all Ladybug's fault! She harassed me for months about keeping thing plumb. Sorry.

@Monterey John: Au contraire mon ami - on this I am every bit as picky as you or your friend. I spent a good deal of time with this image (lens distortion - level grid) and the shoreline is level - as are the tracks and the rooftops. The shoreline protrudes into the strait where those trees are, creating the illusion of tilting. Perhaps I would be wise to compensate by intentionally tilting the image the other way. This is a hard call.

Such a small place, looks less than twenty properties, we wouldn't even call it a village, more of a hamlet.
Love the pools of light on the hillsides.

What's this about a tilted image?! Who gives a rat's patooty..and the shoreline IS moving away...optical illusion - plain and simple....either way, I could care less, this is a flippin great shot! Good catch on the light and the train!

Went to view the full image larger and was absolutely wowed. Great photo. Good thing the train whistle blew or you would have missed this opportunity. Perhaps you could see the tracks but the train really makes it come to life and lend motion to the photo.

I hope that little hamlet receives a portion of the sunlight at some point during the day. Charming view.
