The Benicia Bridges

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 25 February 2011 in Business & Industry and Portfolio.

Looking south towards Contra Costa County and Mount Diablo.

Once while returning from Sacramento - the Amtrak train I was on came to a stop on this railroad drawbridge, allowing a tanker that had departed the Exxon refinery passage before us. This took awhile. The Amtrak cars are double decker types and I'll never forget the experience. Looking out of the train windows the waters churning through the Carquinez Straits seemed a long way down. This immediately went high on my list of places I'd rather not be in the event of an earthquake.

A short history of these bridges and a map are here:

The line of the track sweeping across the water is very cool.

This is a fantastic perspective and composition, Stephen! Sorry to be so late and so short - really trying to get well again...I hope you see snow tomorrow but not enough to endanger!

Fantastic perspective with the twin bridges and tracks seeming to go off into infinity. Also love included the grasses in the foreground.

Fantastic capture Stephen! I driven over these bridges many times but this view from the railroad tracks is totally different.

@Bill Brown: Bill - this was taken from one of the oddest little public parks I have ever seen. It is brand new. An observation point for the Mothball Fleet. You access it off of Park Road in Benicia.
