Whoosh, wow it looks like some speed!
Wonder what the shutter speed was, and how close you were to the train?

14 Feb 2011 11:08am

@Curly: Hey, Curly - I have some data for you. I was on the adjoining spur track - so probably 8 feet from the passing train. It is close enough to experience a pretty strong wind wall as she first goes by. This spur is used for storing unused rail cars. There is a de-railer attached to the track just ahead of me. That's what the purple circle with the large "D" is indicating.

Ralph Jones from Detroit, United States

Wow! I am curious about how you got such a long exposure without any blur from the train vibrating the camera? Great capture.

15 Feb 2011 12:35am

@Ralph Jones: Hey Ralph - this is a very busy section of Union Pacific track - in addition to a lot of freight heading in and out of The Port of Oakland's container facility - 18 passenger trains roll through here daily. The rail bed is very well built and maintained - plus the passenger trains are relatively light and well dampened for shock. The bigger problem is wind off the locomotive. I add weight to the tripod and put extra spread on the legs.

That was close!! Woosh! My first thought was that you were too brave to be that close and perhaps on top of the parallel track - I did read in your response to comments, though that you were on a spur. Pretty brave, though!

magnifique et dangeureux clichés, il marie bien la vitesse du train et le coucher de soleil. j'apprécie également le reflet du paysage dans le train filant.
