Joe / 2011

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 5 January 2011 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

Joe the Boxer

A delightful dog. Boundless energy. Insanity defined should you pair him with a soccer ball.

This is the cover for the 2011 'Rescue Boxer' calendar. Like other rescue animal organizations - Rescue Boxer is dedicated to seeing that whenever one of this breed shows up at a county shelter - that it be fostered until a loving owner is found.

Longtime friend and San Francisco firefighter, Nyki DiVecchio has two rescue dogs. A beautiful setter named Mia - and the wild and irrepressible, Joe.

I was thrilled when Nyki approached me to photograph Joe for the cover.

What a fine looking character, it's nice to be approached to do this sort of work, not so nice when your work is just plain stolen though!

@Curly: Thanks, Curly. She offered to pay me for the shoot and I was happy to refuse. The result has been two fine dinners at her house and she insists she owes me at least one more! For this - I am happy to 'go to the dogs'! As to theft - I suppose we have all experienced it.

I belong to a community of photographers and models who work in fine art nude photography. One of my models pointed me to some numskull in Portland, Oregon who was passing my work off as his own.

I went to this idiot's site and found he had work from about 8 of the photographers up as his. I notified the troops and we went after him - lawyers and all. He vanished. What was over-the-top idiotic is that it would be clear to almost anyone that these images were not the work of a single phonographer. (I'll hang a Picasso, Renoir, Van Gogh, and a Calder; and claim I'm an artist)

The sad thing is he was doing this in order to try and get young women to disrobe in front of him. Pathetic at best, predatory at worse.
