Impatient Hummingbirds

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 20 December 2010 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

Two days before I took ill - I was up visiting my sister-in-law's home in Lake County. While we were talking she happened to mention that she had never seen hummingbirds sticking around this late into the year. This was November 6th. As she spoke - she noticed that the feeder outside the dining area was empty. As she prepared more sugar water and brought in the feeder to fill it she said, "You won't believe what happens when I put this back up."

I grabbed my camera and was indeed unprepared for the onslaught of tiny birds that rushed for this food source as soon as she replaced it on it's hook. And more surprised at how little heed they paid to me and the camera nearby.

This is awesome! We put feeders out, but have never seen more than one. Anytime another hummingbird comes in to feed, the one in residence chases it away, really aggressively. Love the shot.

@RobertB: Thanks, Robert - this was a surprise - for every hummer we see here, many more were held back in the surrounding trees awaiting their turn at the feeder. My guesstimate is that there were 30 to 50 individuals in the yard overall.

Wow! Once in a while we will get two hummingbirds at a time at our feeder, probably mother and chick. Usually, if a second bird shows up, they will make battle over the territory. I've never seen this many at one time. Great shot.

Amazing shot! You never see so many of them at once here! They are very teritorial and chase each other so usually I see only one at a time at my feeder. This is pretty incredible sight!
