Lonely at the Top

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 31 August 2010 in Sport & Recreation and Portfolio.

Out-of-Town Scoreboard Keeper at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

Just picture being in a building along with about 40,000 other people who are watching an event. The event is being televised and broadcast on radio. Those attending are cheering, yelling, screaming, stomping, booing, gasping, and groaning - as appropriate to the fortunes and follies of eighteen men performing before them.

You have the means to view all of this but, instead find yourself focused on the screen of a personal computer - gathering data about similar events happening in like venues around the nation.

Your job is to track any changes in up to 14 other events happening that same day. Each time you see a change - you are to dash about with giant numbers to slide them into slots - so that those 40,000 attendees here, might know what is happening in those distant places.

What a job.

Nice composition. The only character in the middle of this modern architecture is very representative of the fact what is the life nowadays: the solitude in the middle of the infinity

This is definitely a sight that a rabid baseball fan would love to see, but one that is surprising in its simplicity. The vast room devoted to this one task is a little startling!

Must be fun to get into these secret recesses to capture behind the scenes shots.

31 Aug 2010 7:47pm

@Curly: Nothing secret about any of this my friend - all public access. The earlier images are captured in the free viewing area at the park - and today's image was shot from the sidewalk along the waterfront promenade. (I will confess it took awhile to figure an angle on my tripod where I could get the lens through the bars and find a level view across these shrubberies)

You did a great job finding a spot for that tripod....you got an excellent image, and a glimpse of behind the scenes for a lot of us !!! Interesting stuff......Who knew???? I wonder if he likes his job??? Looks like fun to me !!!1

How are the Giants doing? Looks like you were BUST.

@Formerly Known as MontereyJohn: Hey John. You mean you aren't streaming every game? What's-with-that????

Giants are 5 games out behind first place San Diego. 1.5 out in the Wild-Card race behind Philadelphia. We play 4 games against The Padres in San Diego in mid-September. We finish the season playing the Pads at AT&T Park on October 1 - 2 - and 3. That could be a dramatic finale!

Saeed Rasoulof from Tehran, Iran

nice shot
