Sunbreak on The Bay Bridge

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 7 August 2010 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

San Francisco - on a day of rain showers

archival image from 2005

Bringing this image up - I was amazed at how much this section of the skyline has changed in five years. The bright white 'Bank of America' tower immediately to the right of the bridge is gone. A sixty-story condominium stands there now. And - just to the right of that bright white monolith stands a remarkably ugly gray building just behind that brick tower along the waterfront. That is where my office is. Now you know why so many of my photographs have the Bay Bridge in them!

Stephen: Even if this is the first photo that I see today I am already sure that I won't find one that I like more today. Amazing use of the telephoto lens. The 'compression' of foreground and background is amazing.

7 Aug 2010 6:13am

@Mirko Herzner: Thank you so much Mirko - you have started my day with a warm grin. Allow me to use this moment to say that I really enjoy your website but despite some poking around - guessing at the words in German - I haven't yet discovered a way to leave you a comment. You became an early friend in our AM3 community and I really appreciate your presence.

We have no impression by seeing your image that it was made a rainy day because the light is very beautiful. I like it closes up on Bay Bridge!

@Anthony Morgan Lambert: Good morning, Anthony - thanks. And thanks for sticking Bill Withers wonderful song in my head. That is a tune I can happily accommodate rattling around up there!

Susan from Pompano Beach, FL, USA from Pompano Beach, United States

very cool shot stephen, and i'm wondering if you did something special so that the roadway and cars look like they are the only things not surrounded by the haze/fog ??

7 Aug 2010 1:58pm

@Susan from Pompano Beach, FL, USA: Hi Susan and thanks. The answer is no. The vantage point where I took this is difficult to get to. Much of the island's access was closed after Nine-One-One to protect the bridge. I climbed here because it looked like there was a fairly good chance at a dramatic capture. There were rain showers everywhere that day and some more fine rain was coming off the ocean which is why the background is subdued.

By the way: that's 922 foot high Noe Peak (the southern half of 'Twin Peaks') in the back of this image. It is affords the most fantastic 360 degree view of the entire city. Enjoy your weekend, fair Susan - and get out and create an image!

I love the richness of light here, from subtle foggy one to crisp under the bridge, a dreamy air*

Well you are not very far from my son who works down in the financial district somewhere between O"Farrell and Market I think...anyway yes much has changed in the City - i really like your perspective on this photo however...did you take this one from the middle too or some other place? Great pov. awesome!

7 Aug 2010 6:34pm

@Denny Jump Photo: Yerba Buena Island is in the middle of San Francisco Bay about two miles northeast of the Financial District. The Bay Bridge has two distinct segments; the suspension bridge and the cantilever bridge. They are joined by a tunnel through the middle of Yerba Buena. There is an exit that allows access.

It still looks nice even if you feel it's tarnished [changed] over the years. I think its your placement of the bridge as well that lends to this composition, otherwise the skyline is pretty average in this area. What is that curve walled tower in the middle of the right side below the hill? That looks like a fairly interesting building.

Yep, familiar turf.

Now about the attorney thing ..., You should be hearing from mine, Dewey, Cheatum and Howe shortly in response to you preposterous cease and desist order.

As an alternative, I suggest dueling pistols in the parking lot at the old Navy Station on Treasure Island at dusk.

this is a really neat angle - looking up onto the bridge - lighting is also really neat.

Great composition! I like those documents along the time showing the changes of cities and people.
It reminds me the film "Smoke" based on a story of Paul Auster.
