Meta: sunrise study (2010)

Baker Beach - Golden Gate - California

This shoot was a direct result of some research using The Photographer's Ephemeris. This tool allows the user to calculate the points of sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset - as well as the arcs they will take across the sky - anywhere on earth on any date. Wow.

Through the Ephemeris - I knew this would be a beautiful sunrise to capture here - but then when the forecast was for a warm day with a clear sunrise and - well, my plans expanded.

Like a very calm birth... Natural elements & body in total harmony and the very sweet monochrome enhances the feeling of softness...

Russ Devan from New Hanover, United States

Absolutely beautiful, Steven. I like how the angle of her body parallels that of the slanted opening between the boulders. That and the contrast between her light skin and the dark rocks really makes this a standout image. Well done!

@Russ Devan: Thanks, Russ for your generous comments - it is always a pleasure to hear from you.

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

This is absolutely terrific, she mirrors the forms and angles and looks as though she was just meant to be there. A very harmonious composition, well done!

7 Jul 2010 3:50pm

@Curly: Thank you for the kind words, Curly - all of the models I usually work with were either out-of-town or couldn't schedule this early hour. I posted a call-to-model to which Meta responded. We managed a warm-up shoot the day before but essentially - this was our first shoot. She was terrific and we both look forward to working together again.

Susan from Fort Lauderdale, FL, US from Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States

The larger image is just that much more impressive........awesome comp here, and you were quite lucky to have meta to work with.....what i can't figure out is, how'd she get to where she footprints in the sand to follow.....??????

7 Jul 2010 11:25pm

@Susan from Fort Lauderdale, FL, US: Hi there, fireworks Susan - the answer to the mystery is one of timing. This beach had 7 feet of water above it about 6 hours earlier. The sand just behind me was still getting surf and was soft - but the sand here was firm and didn't give but a little under Meta's soft step - so no observable footprints right here.

Magda from Vancouver, Canada

Pavan Kaul from Mumbai, India

Presenting a nude female form without any attempt to titilate is an art, and you have certainly mastered it Stephen! This is a wonderful study in monochrome with perfect placement of the model and lines in the form of sloping rocks...the light is lovely...a great work!!

11 Jul 2010 6:56am

@Pavan Kaul: Thank you very much, Paven - for these thoughtful and kind words. More than anything else, I want my imagery to touch the viewers heart - to resonate within.

Basile Pesso from Paris, City of Aminus, France

An incredible correspondence between the body and the nature forms, that makes a masterpiece, spreading so much freedom and filling the heart.
