Stockton Tunnel

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 8 June 2010 in Art & Design and Portfolio.

Julie in San Francisco. An archive image from the middle of the night - November 2006.

This is the Stockton Tunnel under Nob Hill. Julie and I are at the southern edge of Chinatown - the lights at the far end of the tunnel shine from Union Square. This is a Sunday morning - about three hours before sunrise. The fellow walking up the sidewalk to my right can plainly see the 'end of the tunnel'.

[tomorrow]: something completely different.

I do not dare to imagine the disorder which you have to sow in streets of San Francisco when you show attractive naked women??? LOL !

The B&W gives it a timeless surreal double effect. Super cool !

I wonder how many of your hours are spent driving around in the middle of the night looking for useful quiet locations Lol:-)

@Curly: Well, Curly - some, for certain. But I love being out and about at that hour anyway. Plus, I will often pass a spot during the day and know that it would be terrific for this series. What takes the most of my time is when I actually schedule a model. Then, I will go out a night or two beforehand and actually scout the shoot - making note of light and exposure. It saves a good deal of time during the 'real' thing and minimizes the model's time in the chill air. And, I leave time for improvisation as well - such as when Kat and I came across the Airstream Trailer - and shot her reflections in it. Cheers!

Just my luck! With the hectic events of life, I manage to make it over to your blog on Silly Tuesday and am able to enjoy yet another wonderfully executed piece of art. Bravo Stephen!

Always like a good tunnel shot, especially with the lights and contrasts here. Also, the young lady really enhances the fascinating composition.
