Drawbridge at Steamboat Slough

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 2 May 2010 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Today's post was inspired by our friend, Curly (South Shields, UK):

Another 'Slough' (rhymes with boo) image - this from the archives...

The water in the foreground in the Sacramento River - flowing south from right to left. Across the river is the eastern mouth of Steamboat Slough. The drawbridge will be raised dozens of times on the weekend in the summer months as sailboats come and go.

Just inside the slough on the left is a restaurant and bar. Scores of these places line the banks in this area - all know as 'resorts' and each featuring small marinas where you can secure your vessel - so to climb the planks to find food and drink. Many have fuel docks to keep the motors chugging - this one does not.

On the opposite shore is a small sandy beach - just below the bridge. A dollar or two gains access and families haul down coolers and baskets and grills to make a day along the stream. Driving across the bridge - you can hear the children in the water - laughing and yelling and splashing one another.

The fragile nature of this area has kept the developers away for the most part. I love visiting this region - less than two hours drive from San Francisco.

Thanks Steve, it's starting to make more sense now, this is what we (over here) would call a sluice gate, and would be used to control the levels of water in the sluice. They are quite common in eastern England in fenlands and marshes as well as the Norfolk Broads, they ensure a supply of water for irrigation and to maintain the habitat for wildlife without leading to excess flooding. When the flood plain becomes too saturated the sluice gates are opened to allow water to flow into the larger rivers or lakes.

Great picture, nice and serene, a great natural mirror!

@Curly: Hey Curly. We have sluices here as well, in fact this area supports thousands of these irrigation and flood control features. It occurred to me that the UK isn't flat enough to support any widespread areas of sloughs. With some help from Google - I've mapped this area:

I hope this helps.

Very calming. The colors of deep dusk are fantastic. I like the fact that you can't really make out the bridge in the darkness, but its reflection is perfect below it. I can hear the quiet voices from the restaurant.

@David: Thanks, David - I appreciate the kind words.

Beautiful scene. And the sky over it all is incredible. I point with joy to the one single star (or is that a planet) presiding with its pure, peaceful shine over the entire thing. Bravo Stephen.
