Sand Bar and Storm

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 14 March 2010 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

Scott Creek - Santa Cruz County - California

This was 30 or 40 meters south of yesterday's post. The sand bar here had forced the creek northward into a stone face where it then pushed an opening into the open ocean. The storm is now at landfall. Just after making this capture - I was running across the highway with the camera and fully extended tripod - seeking shelter in the car. It was pouring rain.

Nature in its moments of "flight" and stength. Very good composition and depth.

Ralph Jones from Detroit, United States

Great photo, and great find. I have seen many sandbars in my time but never one like this one. I hope you made it to shelter before you and the camera got too wet.

14 Mar 2010 12:46pm

@Ralph Jones: We did get a little wet - the rain drops were big and heavy, the car was about 20 meters away. A good towel went straight to the camera ( I knew I could wait until later ). Thanks, Ralph.

Chris from South Jersey, United States

Amazing look at nature's creativity here!! I've never seen a sandbar captured so beautifully and completely out of the water.......worth sticking it out to the very last minute!!!

14 Mar 2010 1:55pm

@Susan: Thanks, Susan - I drove by here two days ago and wanted to show how much the water had dropped - but their were so many surfers and sail-boarders that there was no safe place to park!

GH from Ker, France

Magnificent sky for a beach of color wildcat (!) You are lucky. Take care.

@GH: Thank you, GH - for revealing the 'wildcat' - and the good wishes. I appreciate my 'luck' and I am profoundly grateful for it. Be well and take care, yourself.

The sandbank brings a solidness to the foreground, and then the heavy clouds .. It's almost as if the earth is pushing upward and the clouds are pushing downward. Crazy idea, but once the thought hit me, I could "see" this every time I looked at this layered shot.
