The Bluffs at Pescadero

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 9 March 2010 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

a stormy day along the California coast...

I didn't make it very far after leaving the beach at Pomponio Creek. Here we are about 5km (3 miles) further south along the Pacific Coast Highway - at Pescadero. This has always been a favorite spot along the coast but I've never seen it more beautiful. This is a good look at how wild the weather was this day.

[tomorrow]: we continue south...

note: I'll be traveling for the next few days and will check-in when possible. So, 'til when and joyous light to you all...

What a dramatic image, Stephen. Such huge waves and the dark sky make for a wonderful shot.

A great coastal capture. It looks like Mother Nature is about release some fury!

9 Mar 2010 2:22pm

@Yonatan: Mother Nature complied with plenty of fury - as well as some sunshine - it was quite a day! Thanks, Yonatan - there's more to come.

You show us a soft ruggedness of it. I'm particularly down to the wing like quality of the headlands and wind hewn cypress...my eye soars. best...jerry

ps I'm certain my memories of Carmel are antiquated by now.

9 Mar 2010 6:05pm

@ordinaryimages: Jerry - please - you haven't gotten back to me on what to order at 'Lamonts' in Watsonville. My client had need of me asap today so I couldn't stop coming down but would love to try it northbound - - - what do you recommend?

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

I'm struck by how similar our coastlines are Stephen, and they offer variety all year round. I'd love to see it when it is at it's worst! :-)

i think sometimes there are more beautiful places in the world than the california coast-- places like the lagoon at aitutaki, or the island of bora bora, or those villages in italy or greece with the pastel or white houses built into the cliffs cascading down to the sea.
but driving the california coast highway, almost at every turn you go oooh and ahhh at something new. i like the ruggedness: the cliffs, the rocks, the full heavy waves, and sky and birds. it's beautiful because it surprises. it's not one-dimensional. it's organic and powerful in ways found nowhere else in the world.
great picture, by the way.

10 Mar 2010 12:20am

@Seraphine: Slowly - as I've wandered the path of this life - I've learned to value the beauty of wherever I am. To not compare. All of the places you name have their own stunning beauty. There are days when it seems evasive. I've stood at the very spot where I took this capture on days that were hazy and flat and where the sea seemed a dull gray mud. Yet even on those days - I see beauty in the birds and suculants and in the peace of it all.

Susan from Fort Lauderdale, United States

Oh yeah, looks just like the beautiful scenic beaches we have here....NOT !!! This shot makes me long for the west coast.......the light here is perfect!!!!!

10 Mar 2010 12:37am

@Susan: What is it they say - "familiarity breeds contempt." - I sure think of ocean water warm enough to actually BE in - and that lovely soft 'sugar sand' of Florida.

Liang from San Francisco, United States
