not too late...

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 16 February 2010 in Abstract & Conceptual and Portfolio.

...a belated Valentine's Day greeting from San Francisco. For our Tuesday.

Model: Ella

[special note]: This was one of 130 fiberglass hearts that were parts of a 2004 fundraiser for San Francisco General Hospital. Each was a unique artwork - commissioned by individual artists. Some of them are still on display - including this one - which has a very beautiful painting of the Golden Gate Bridge - painted by Tony Bennett. Tony is a resident of San Francisco and a very talented painter.

you're amazing
very creative, new, daring and also funny

Hey Stephen, how inventive and creative! You're such a genius and a lovely naughty man too! This is an incredible catch and wonderfully amusing too!!!:-) Don't know how you could avoid all the passers-by - it didn't look to be that late!

I think (actually - know) I prefer this creative view of the heart! And I'm sure Tony would agree. Roll on next Tuesday! And I hope you had a good Valentine's Day too - sure looks like it :)

@Ralph Jones: Yes - occasionally. Evidence: http://www.pbase.com/joyoflight/image/92139003

Never knew Tony Bennett was an artist so thanks for that too, I wonder what the taxi driver thought of this. The level of colour and the warmth of the light is quite fantastic for what must have been an early morning shoot.

Great art ! How do you manage to do that kind of shots without having troubles ? Anyway, it's very well done, I like it :)

16 Feb 2010 4:46pm

@Tamara: Well, Tamara - it IS San Francisco. And we only do this in the wee hours of Sunday morning when there is very little activity and almost no chance of kids being around.

Marcie from United States

I have to wonder what time of night (or wee hour of the morning) it was that you did this!! Wonderful..creative..fun image. But - did she really walk around downtown without any clothes on??? FUN!!!

16 Feb 2010 5:16pm

@Marcie: About 4:30 AM - Sunday morning. The model's robe or coat is always over my left shoulder so I am ready to toss it to her quickly should any situation develop. I don't want to be to specific - but we've actually gotten some very fine and considerate assistance from security in a number of places we've shot.

Ella almost appears to be doing her unique variation on the work of Atlas, not holding up the earth, but doing a pretty good lift on that one big heart. Excellent, imaginative composition. It's a "keeper" Stephen.

What a shot and statement!
A heavy heart on Valentines Day...I feel her pain, and the cold of the season.
Bravo...this is awesome!

hello. I feel that the heart and model are not one and the same sculpture. there is an idea that I can not catch the mistake in the translation of google ....

You continue to impress me with your masterful handling of light. I find myself more and more not taking pictures because I tell myself the light is not ideal (i.e. no sunrise/sunset), but this shot just goes to show that you can get spectacular results at other times of the day. The model is beautiful and the heart is glistening. A superb picture!

Ah....more of your spencer tunick style shots......good thing I didn't know about that heart installation....Hearts are just my fave, and I would have had to travel around the city, and shoot every last one!!! Love what you did with this one, and right in front of family oriented Disney, to boot!!! Cool !!!

When the heart is larger than the body, something has to give. We have horses here—of course—in lieu of hearts. best...jerry

LOL @ the link! (http://www.pbase.com/joyoflight/image/92139003). OK now I have questions about how many accidents were caused as a result of this?

17 Feb 2010 2:15pm

@Ralph Jones: I am happy to report back Ralph - that would be zero. Thanks for the concern. I'll remind you that our annual 'Bay-to-Breakers' foot race draws over 100,000 entrants each year and a fair number of them run it in the buff. It takes far more than a little flesh to derail most San Franciscans.

Magda from Vancouver, Canada

Ohhh this is fabulous!!! Love this
