Original point of view and very sharp image. I didn't remember that fort :)

@Paco Díaz: Fort point is situated directly below the south end of The Golden Gate Bridge. Military presence at the site was established under Spain in 1776 - the same year that the Mission San Francisco de Asis was founded.

California was governed under Spain, Mexico, a brief two-year period of independent sovereignty before becoming a United States territory and then state. It was shortly after entering into statehood in September of 1850 that the brick fort that you see here was erected.

The fort is the same design as Fort Sumter in South Carolina - with is know for being the 'birth place of the (U.S.) Civil War." It is an impressive fortress and is open to the public Thursdays through Sundays each week. The amazing thing is that it was obsolete before the first brick was laid, as its artillery could only reach targets half way across the channel. Any vessel steering to the north could easily stay out of range of the guns!

nice framed, an original point of view like said Paco.

wonderful catch...when i think of how i squandered my photographic time in that wonderful city, it makes me sad.....

6 Feb 2010 2:28pm

@Susan: Do NOT be sad dear Susan! Look at this as an opportunity to return - and soon! Think of your first run here as a scouting expedition. Think of all the new knowledge and skills you will come back here with. My favorite time for photography - late March through early April. You might get a little rain - but the sky is fabulous.

Chris from South Jersey, United States

I really like this long view down the coast to the city in the distance.....I think I would have enjoyed it a bit more if that stretch of missing coast was included.

6 Feb 2010 6:27pm

@Chris: Sorry about that missing chunk of coast. - you are quite correct - there was some element at the fort parking lot I was trying to exclude. It will be worth a re-shoot when I can. Thanks, Chris.

Saw this fort from the bay tour boat, but not this angle. I'm guessing you chose to walk the bridge? It was too cold to our Florida sensibilities to try that, but I'd really like to walk it next time we come. Inspirational shot, Stephen.
