Flying Into the Wind

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 25 January 2010 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

Model August - at Schwan Lagoon Beach - Santa Cruz, California

A remarkable morning. This is the north side of Monterey Bay during a break in a powerful storm that hit all of California for days last week. Winds that gusted to hurricane force and driving rains made getting here a bit of an adventure.

We both love the energy given off by these storms. Here - August's spirit takes flight - accompanied by some feathered escorts.

j'aurais bien retiré toutes les mouettes qui sont coupées en deux pour ne garder que celles que l'on voit bien. Mais j'aime ce personnage face aux éléments

This is a really superb image - you have captured the "wildness" of the scene perfectly.

You have captured the tension and energies of the elements very well. Alfred Hitchcock would be jealous.

August looks as though she is ready to fly herself. This is beautiful with the swirling of the birds and the wide open sea with everywhere to go.

This is a great image, there's a certain feeling of freedom to it. I'd love to see a contrasty, silhoutte-laden black and white version.

@digitalCG: I'll see what I can do...

k@ from Paris, France

No montage ? Superb compo as the birds seem to crown her !

Susan from Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States

beautiful shot Stephen.....only a truly dedicated photographer would brave the elements just for a shot!!!

25 Jan 2010 11:48pm

@Susan: I'd be there even if I didn't have a camera, Susan. I love storms - especially storms along the coast. August feels the same way - she nearly begged me to bring her along. We had a great day together.

MK from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

good one. do u already know that the birds wud be there?

26 Jan 2010 12:56am

@MK: Thanks for visiting MK - the birds were moving slowly because they were flying into the wind - so the answer is yes - I knew and even got several captures of them around her.

Viewfinder from Bradenton, FL, United States

I feel that wind and hear the roar of the surf; back home in New Orleans I'd go to the Lake Pontchartrain seawall to experience the elements at their peak. Somehow I always felt God's power and presence in them and it was good. But never did I get a big flock of circling gulls to go with it, like your model has around her. Awesome!

26 Jan 2010 3:22am

@Viewfinder: I love Lake Pontchartrain. I can imagine what a storm looks like blowing across her! Have they finished repairing the bridge? Another treat in the region. I completely agree with your 'presence of God' assessment. You can't miss it if you are paying attention. Cheers.
