Home on the Range

The kitchen of this beautifully built Laural Heights home. And some rambling thoughts...

As much as I might enjoy working in this spacious and well organized culinary center - it comes off to me as formal and uninviting. I'll be sharing Thanksgiving dinner with friends at a home a couple of hours north of here. The kitchen there (also with an island) opens into a comfortable living area. A large stone fireplace and overstuffed leather sofas invite a social gathering. The perfect place to deposit your overstuffed self after the meal. The large 'L' shaped room is anchored by the dining area. I say, that the best parties center around an inviting eating area.

Memo to self - I'll have to grab a photo...

Tomorrow is the American holiday of Thanksgiving. It is and always has been my favorite holiday of the year. Aside from turkey producers, cranberry bog owners, and potato farmers - the day of gratitude has remained fairly free of commercial exploitation - and its central idea is delightfully pure.

Have a happy and reflective Thanksgiving Day everybody - wherever in the world you happen to be.

Brilliant title, Stephen. And I agree, it does look a little cold, though you have done a great job with the photo. Happy Thanksgiving to you for tomorrow.

I much prefer our own modest kitchen, it is the hub and the heart of our home and where we tend to congregate when we've got a do on..Enjoy your Thanksgiving Stephen and best wishes to you.

I totally agree that this is a rather formal looking kitchen, but I gotta tell ya, that fireplace is just wonderful there!! Certainly wouldn't want anything like that down here in Heat Ville, but what a nice thing to have on a chilly day up north!!! Have a wonderful time with your friends tomorrow...that's what Thanksgiving is for....friends and family......Enjoy !!!

Amen, and working backward through the next few shots to this one, I totally agree that this one is stiff and formal in contrast to your friends' warm and inviting home. The difference, I believe, is in the "life" and hospitality which your friends and all bring to the surroundings. This one is still a blank slate, waiting for similar folks to step in.
