Life at Bixby Bridge

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 17 November 2009 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

I was fascinated by this assembly of items at the base of Bixby Creek Road. Most of the folks in the cars that roar past this spot - and even those who stop to take a photo or two of this graceful bridge - probably fail to notice this island of support to those who live in the dozen or so homes up this dirt road.

The mail boxes. The lone power pole holding the only lines that send power up the canyon. That sign reads: "IMPASSABLE IN WET WEATHER" - a clue to how isolated this place can become. And then there's that strange looking pipe configuration at the left - which is - a mail box - perhaps the finest I've ever seen!

An awesome mix of technology and advancement along a very rugged stretch of coastline! The real question is do they have DSL on those lines?? A great capture with a ton of visual interest!!

@Scott F. Schilling: Thanks, Scott - I was again looking at that fine, fine sunrise image you took overlooking Emerald Bay. That is a most memorable photograph.

Truly a stunning collection of little things so important to people living here. Thanks for sharing the details, Stephen.

Ok, this is how your brain works in mysterious ways....at first glance, with the water in the background, the shape of the guardrail, and the power pole, and the pole in the front....My brain told me "Boat" !!! and even after reading your description, which, by the way, is quite informative.....I still look at it, and see a boat of sorts..........Great shot Stephen, I'm just surprised that no one has mentioned the "boat" is see in the image yet!!!

@Susan: I couldn't help but muse what a scary sight it would be - driving along the Coast Highway at night - and having a ship passing alongside - in the northbound lane, opposite the ocean. Now, that would get your attention!

Fascinating capture Stephen, definitely a curious scene, one like I've never seen before. Looks like a beautiful place, lovely background landscape. Excellent shot, quite unique and interesting.

This is a great image with a good narrative. I get a sense of the isolation.
