Autumn in the Vineyards

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 22 October 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Mendocino County - California

It is difficult for me to acknowledge that summer is really gone. That said...

It is time to celebrate the harvest. So - here we go. Four of my favorites from the vineyards in the fall. Today through Sunday.

There's a great quality to the light and I love the autumn colours in the vines!

My favorite time in the valley, have not made it there unfortunately.... My wine has been delivered to the door instead.

@See The Light: Wine at your door and you don't even have to get out of your robe and slippers? Mary, you may have this whole life-style thing figured out! There are at least some advantages to maturity.

Love this well thought out composition.

Now this is a super photo. I like how the light is bouncing off the rolling hill and how the shadows are spanning across the road. What a lovely looking place.

Umm! This is what I wanted to see, but July was too early. So I'll look forward to viewing these beautiful vineyards in harvest time through your lenses. Beautiful scene here Stephen; I love the rolling contour of the land and the background hills beyond.

@Viewfinder: Thanks, Glenn. This series is an archival one. These images are actually from late November. The leaves in the vineyards are just beginning to turn right now. When considering your next trip in this direction - my suggestion to friends is very late March into early April. The rainy season is pretty much over. The fog hasn't begun in earnest. The hills are green and the waterfalls at their highest flows. The other great time is September and October. These are our warmest months along the coast. But this is also the height of fire season and the falls and rivers are generally way down.

Personally - my favorite time is mid-winter. You can get and need to be prepared for most anything. The downside is that the highest mountain passes (Sonora, Tioga) are closed, and you can get substantial snows in the northern redwoods.

Come to think of it - just arrange to come out and spend a year!

beautiful colors and composition - it reminds me of the movie "A Walk in the Clouds"......well done.

Love your idea to viewfinder, about coming out for a year!!!! Are you offering dorm space for that year??? Gorgeous shot, and brought back memories....the first day we were in San Fran, I had the "brilliant idea" of driving up to Mendocino, for a "quick" little trip...didn't realize how far it really was from SF....but it was a gorgeous ride....

22 Oct 2009 10:21pm

@susan: Well Susan - you let me know when you're planning on coming and I'll report back on 'dorm' availability. I'm going to be moving sometime in the next two months and haven't decided where - so I can't exactly answer until then.

Meanwhile - the vineyard in this image (just south of Ukiah) is much closer to Mendocino than to San Francisco. I hope you had a chance to spend a little time in the area while you were there.

Gorgeous scenery, light and composition.

@ordinaryimages: I have no favorites - we are so blessed here. I'll happily head north, south, or east at any opportunity. I'm sounding like the tourist commission - so, when can we expect your return?

Paco Díaz from Palma de Mallorca, Spain

Very beautiful autumn colors. I like very much this angle to show the landscape in the background.
