Farming Rust II

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 5 October 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

In addition to this tractor - we have five starlings. Four females and one lone male. But he's the one on top of the steering wheel. Some things seem so set - so unchanging. And so it goes...

We used to have a lot of starlings in this country but for what ever reason, their numbers seem to be in a big decline. A lovely photo as always.

@Mike: The decline of any population should warrant our attention - but drastically falling numbers of starlings in the UK sounds particularly worrisome. They are such a hearty bird and they're omnivores with a widely varied diet. I can't imagine this and find it puzzling.

Love this old tractor in the tall grass - and the birds add another nice touch. Thanks for pointing out that the male starling is driving - I bet he won't ask for directions though!!

Great shot - I love the contrast....

5 Oct 2009 1:45pm

@Chris: Judging from the condition of the tractor - asking for directions seems a non-issue. It's a good thing they have their wings.
