Driving Along the Lost Coast

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 3 April 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Mattole Road - Humboldt County Route 211 - is the amazing drive that actually runs along a small section of the lost coast of California.

I'd mentioned this part of California a few weeks back. It is a roughly 96 kilometer (60 mile) section of the california coast that has (with one exception) not been developed. This is the only road that traverses a small section of the beaches along a remote part of that coastline.

There are no towns or services along this section of beach. Just a couple of farms. The photograph here is of the hills north of the coastal section. Below is the Bear River flowing into the Pacific just below a few houses that form the settlement of Capetown, California.

Looks like a wonderful drive - is the low speed limit because the roads are dangerous?

3 Apr 2009 7:34am

@dobbino: Not dangerous, so much as very narrow with tight turns and lots of livestock grazing - they sometimes find their way out onto the roadway.

Is the low speed limit because they dont want you to miss any of the views??

3 Apr 2009 7:38am

@chrissy: No problem with that. I found I sometimes needed to remind myself to watch where I was driving.

@dj.tigersprout: Great to hear from you, Jaycee. You sound to be happy and thriving. Hooray! Personally - growing up in the Washington, D.C. area - I am glad to have escaped the Big East. I love visiting but happy to be on the left coast. I can't wait to get to your blog and see what you've been up to. I just saw your Facebook post and plan to join you on Twitter. Be well, my friend - and stay in touch.
