Beautiful mood in this shot. The warm tones and reflections, and that sky is just incredible. Wonderful capture!

1 Mar 2009 5:09am

@bluechameleon: I'd been returning from the East Bay the night before - listening to 'Star Date' on Public radio. These two were 'about a fist apart' when held at arms length. Sandy Wood said that the next night - this night - they would be elbow to elbow after sunset. So I was planning on shooting this. I was so disappointed when the sky clouded over. Hours later - a lucky break - and this was the result...

shroom from DFW, United States

Another beaut. Is your camera on steroids? Susan got a moon/star combo pic Friday night, too ... just in case you didn't see her explanation -

1 Mar 2009 5:38am

@shroom: Thanks to you, shroom. No steroids. Late last year - I began doing pre-processing in Adobe Lightroom™ and I believe that's the difference you're seeing. Monterey John has made several posts about his experience and thrill at using Lightroom™.

I enjoyed Susan's take of this celestial pairing very much - and we've written one another about this. There is good detail of the moon in her capture. Thanks for the 'heads-up' - all the best...

Suzanne from Huntington Bch, California, United States

Magical...I love it.

Liang from San Francisco, United States

this, my friend, is just excellent timing. I love every part of this photo Stephen! Excellent job!

1 Mar 2009 5:59am

@Liang: Thank you, sir. The only bad timing here was that I was wearing shorts and a Hawaiian shirt - in celebration of the mild day earlier. It was freezing out along the Marina Green while I was shooting. Thankfully - my car was close by and I made good use of its heater.

Sharon from Los Angeles, United States

BEAUTIFUL.... really really beautiful...

1 Mar 2009 6:57am

Paco Díaz from Palma de Mallorca, Spain

You are patient hunter, Stephen, and this is the wonderful prey :)
Very romantic, perfect lighting. We saw Venus on top of the moon... but no camera available then :(

1 Mar 2009 8:31am

@Paco Díaz: Thanks, Francisco. It took me several decades of learning this the hard way. It is rare that I am without a decent camera and tripod nearby.

Marie LC from Voiron, France

Lovely night shot, like it very much. The moon through the clouds makes a fantastic atmosphere and add a lot to to the the picture.

1 Mar 2009 2:27pm

Susan from Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States

Well, you certainly outdid my measly old moon and venus with your shot!!! Your shot really shows the whole story of that night!!! and i agree, your camera must be on steroids!!!

1 Mar 2009 3:17pm

@Susan: Forgive a dissenting view, Susan. As I wrote our friend, Shroom - your image had a good look at the 'dark' areas of the moon - basking in the earth's reflected light. Not an easy capture. Your image is impressive and I like it a lot.

DenisSm from Prague, Czech Republic

just amazing Stephen .....

1 Mar 2009 4:09pm

@Lorraine: Oh, Lorraine - you know you can't see many stars at all with this much moon and cloud. On a more serious note - thanks.

@Eric Fry: Hey, hey, hey - Eric. Thanks. I've been so busy and February has already slipped from the wall. Any ideas for a March theme?

Great shot without moon and venus that capture makes it fabulous. Wow!

1 Mar 2009 10:02pm

Yonatan from Bronx, United States

Stephen, this shot is another winner. Am I seeing the moon reflecting in the sky or is there something just above the sliver?

1 Mar 2009 10:27pm

@Yonatan: Low clouds were coming in off the Pacific in advance of a storm (which is still hitting us). The light above was indeed moon light in that cloud as it moved in front of moon during the 15 second exposure.

grant from kansas city, United States

Wow! This is amazing! I need to take lessons on how to take photos at night from you - there are none better! Looks like you've been busy while I've been away - all great work, as usual. The lady with the birds especially caught my eye.

Mike from Lichfield, United Kingdom

Now this is an awesome photo. I bet you're well pleased with it. I'm going to have to do some research now because most days when it's not cloudy I tend to have a glance up at the moon but I haven't seen Venus.

2 Mar 2009 6:27am

@Mike: Thanks, Mike. Sorry to report that you'll need to wait until next year. The moon moves hugely day to day compared to the relative movements of Venus. Venus was about 20 degrees ahead of the moon on Thursday, even here on Friday, and 20 degrees behind on Saturday.

Hema Iyer from Bangalore, India

Awesome shot. The mood of the clouds, venus and moon....and the beautiful bridge below. Beautiful.
