Paco Díaz from Palma de Mallorca, Spain

The seagulls must be very happy with that generous woman :)
She doesn't remember Hitchcock's The Birds
Let me know when you come to Spain, to suggest you some places to visit.

20 Feb 2009 5:34am

@Paco Díaz: High on my list of things to do in Spain would be meet with you, Francisco - if we can work that out. I am grateful for your offer and will certainly let you know. Thanks!

Scott Schilling from San Martin, United States

Dear Stephen, this was a wonderful catch with the food in the air! My eyes were drawn to the lady first with the raised hand and then they caught a glimpse of the food in the air and the excitement was there in the photo! Nice work on this street scene.

20 Feb 2009 6:27am

@Scott Schilling: Thanks so much, Scott. I was consciously trying to catch her as she tossed the crackers but was amazed to discover how sharp they were in the capture. I love the position and light on her hand.

Marie LC from Voiron, France

Marcie from United States

Aaaah..there she is. I think the woman in my photo was feeding the birds the exact same thing. Such a powerful image. So many stories to be told here.

20 Feb 2009 12:59pm

@Marcie: It is all about spirit and trust. Thanks, Marcie.

Lorraine from Gatineau, Canada

What a precious moment to have caught, beautiful photo Stephen :)

@Lorraine: Thank you, Lorraine.

dogilicious from Millerstown, PA, United States

Cool shot! I think all those birds would freak me out! She must have missed the "please don't feed the seagulls" sign.

20 Feb 2009 2:02pm

@dogilicious: These birds know this woman well, I suspect. There are such signs and I support their message. Yet sometimes the rules need to yield. This woman seems so clear in her mission. Her spirit shines. She is clearly a danger to society and the eco-system; an outlaw to be sure.

Calusarus from St Sorlin en Valloire, France

EYES WIDE SHUT from The library of my soul, United Kingdom

A great shot, Stephen and I love the little fellow sitting on the bench with her, now he deserves a reward for bravery. In Trafalgar Square, London which has been a pigeon feeding haven for tourists since time began, they passed a law recently forbidding the feeding of the birds. A seed seller lost his life long job and there was a public outcry.

Luckily nobody cares about the law, and everyone still feeds the pigeons. It's also a fact that pigeons cannot read and do not understand English law, and thus they continue to feed oblivious to the ridiculous laws, thought up by some sad lowlife who has never had a days fun in their life.

A really neat shot, very well captured

20 Feb 2009 7:16pm

@EYES WIDE SHUT: She really touched me. She seemed so focused on her mission - with grace and without much emotion. Several pigeons were at her side - and many more at her feet. She gave them no particular focus or favoritism. She just opened bag after bag and put forth the contents. She left it to the birds to calculate and figure the distribution. I felt as though I was more aware of her - than she was of her flock - or herself. She drove up next to my car in her Acura - quietly got out and proceeded with the task at hand. No ceremony or fuss - rarely showing any emotion at all.

Suzanne from Huntington Bch, California, United States

Terrific capture, Stephen. Beautifully times shot and that pigeon next to her adds a bit of imagined whimsey. Love it.

Very cool moment. I see what you mean about her hand...the whole event seems very whimsical from her perspective. She has air on nonchalance about her.

Great capture! I really like the colourful tiles on the wall and that one bird sitting on the bench ready to be fed. Very well composed!

I would love to see a close up of those tiles - they look very interesting... children's artwork - unique and one of a kind. Just a suggestion. ;)

25 Feb 2009 12:11am

@Magda: Thanks for all of the kind words and the suggestion about the tiles. This image was in Capitola and I get there frequently. I'll see about getting a more revealing image of the tiles on my next trip...
