A Cloudy Afternoon at The Golden Gate

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 1 February 2009 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

Here we look down over the same hill we were looking up yesterday. The open pier that actually extends beyond the center-right edge of this image - is the place where I stood to take yesterday's capture. The tall white apartments at the upper left - are the same buildings at the top of the hill in yesterday's view.

This is the view from atop of Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill.

This photograph gives a clear idea of how massive The Golden Gate Bridge really is. The land mass at top right is the start of The Marin Headlands. The narrow spit of land beyond the bridge ends at Point Bonita. Beyond that are the open waters of The Pacific Ocean.

Scott Schilling from San Martin, United States

Dear Stephen, You always get such wonderful clarity in your photos - another beautiful image with great color. The composition is balanced perfectly with the City foreground and the bridge and ocean in the background - an incredible structure and great photo! Its nice to see a little green on the hills!!

1 Feb 2009 7:31am

@Scott Schilling: Ah, Scott - thank you for the kind words. I am sorry to report that the green you are seeing is historic - this was a 2005 image that I wanted to re-work. We so desperately need rain. The forecast says a chance of rain this Thursday and Friday - that is welcome news but we need a series of drenching storms.

Impressive. And I like the tones here. The Golden bridge is very different with this light

The peak of the bridge in the middle forces to see it in a new way over the city - that's great !

Despite the cast in the air there again is so much clarity in this image. Sharp. Well done.

Superb, Stephen. The GG bridge in the background really balances the composition. Absolutely filled with interest, a wonderful photograph

Alun Lambert from cheshire, United Kingdom

very good cityscape

Suzanne from Huntington Bch, California, United States

This one is especially lovely. The bay resembles a sheet of silver. Also, a little thing like the single boat heading toward the bridge adds so much.

1 Feb 2009 8:13pm

@Suzanne: Thanks. I agree - I love the boat. A Blue & Gold Fleet vessel with tourists heading to make their turn underneath the bridge. A scene repeated over and over - many times a day - but seldom on such a flat and lonely bay.

dogilicious from Millerstown, PA, United States

Great wide angle shot. The geography lesson is welcomed. Well done.

Liang from San Francisco, United States

i want to go up to coit tower too, but I heard it's very difficult to get around there, especially for parking. being a out of towner (i'm from vallejo) i'm trying my best to get around SF with the best transportation possible! Your shot is excellent !

1 Feb 2009 8:41pm

@Liang: It is not bad at all if you go mid-week this time of year. Be sure to call or go online to make sure that they will be open. There is a city bus that runs up there on a regular schedule. NOTE: All of the windows are glass - you may want to bring a tripod and polarizing filter.

Observing from West Cheshire, United Kingdom

Well you could have kidded us Stephen by saying it was early morning, it has that look. I think I could get used to living there.... let me know when you have my appt ready :))

1 Feb 2009 10:47pm

@Observing: I would have a hard time explaining that reflected pool of light coming in from the west if the sun were behind me. As to the apartment - send a big stack of cash and I'll be happy to see what I can find for you.

Jorge from Daly City, United States

Yes it's a magnificent and beautiful bridge. I agree with Susan there is definitely something about the bridge that makes one come back. I too am hoping for more rains... Hey, I can see the watch tower of Ghirardelli square!

@Doug: Not much so far this year - man, do we need some rain.

grant from kansas city, United States

fantastic view. i would have guessed early morning without your title.

4 Feb 2009 12:49am

@grant: Your 'Gate' would have needed to open to that other Ocean, Grant.
