Celebrating Calzone's

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 29 January 2009 in Food & Cuisine and Portfolio.

A night on the town at this very popular North Beach eatery in San Francisco. Hey, how many restaurants are there where you can sit outdoors under a nice warm heater in the rain? Talk about romantic...

Even though it looks damp and chilly, sitting at one of those tables looks very inviting. Terrific night scene, Stephen.

29 Jan 2009 5:56am

@Suzanne: Thanks, Suzanne. It was actually a very pleasant evening. I took this on Christmas Eve. It was a lovely evening in North Beach. All of the restaurants were busy and people were all in a festive mood. A sweater or light jacket was called for - but it was rainy and mild. I took this not far from the Chinese man with the string instrument the I posted on the day after Christmas. You can see this place in that photograph:

After I photographed the musician - I wandered on down to Broadway and then up along the Bohemian end of Grant Avenue before returning along Columbus Avenue and this capture.

Excellent night pic

Mike from Lichfield, United Kingdom

It looks like a wonderful place to eat and popular too. I'll googling the place in a minute to see if I can find a sample menu of theirs. I'm assuming the three people smiling at the camera are with you...... and I'm guessing the people sat at the table are just being nosey. :)

29 Jan 2009 7:05am

@Mike: Thanks, Mike. I hope you found their menu - but find myself at a loss as to how the food will stay hot and fresh until they get it to your door!?! And I'm sorry to report that the girls aren't with me. They were waiting for the valet or their boy friends to fetch the car. They saw the camera. I yelled out that they'd have to hold very still. They did - and this was the result! And with all of that happening - were I seated at one of the tables - I'd be curious, too!

Magda from Vancouver, Canada

Oooo those lights are wonderful! What a great mood captured..... Gorgeous!
I will reply to your last message soon! I appreciate your time and help more than you think! :)

29 Jan 2009 7:11am

@Magda: Thanks (and my pleasure).

LeenaM from Joensuu, Finland

Sitting outside for eating - hm - look at our views and you can believe, I would like to be there
just for one day :)

29 Jan 2009 8:46am

@LeenaM: Location, location, location. Your revenge will be this June - when you are outside at 10 PM and it is still mild and light out - and we here in San Francisco are chill and wind blown by our famous fog.

EYES WIDE SHUT from United Kingdom

Looks like a great place to spend some time. I don't think I've ever sat outside and eaten in the rain like that, looks terrific

29 Jan 2009 3:02pm

@Jeff: Well, Jeff - I wouldn't want you to loose your boyish figure - so no more restaurants for now. We all need to be in shape for our upcoming photo challenge number one from Eric Fry on AM3 on Facebook:

"Your Favorite Restaurant" - to be taken between 2/1 and 2/14 and posted on your AM3 page on February 15th. Details will be released tomorrow.

29 Jan 2009 6:11pm

@k@: Your summoning of Edward Hopper is greatly appreciated - a calendar featuring his paintings his hanging above my left shoulder as I type this - thank you, k@.

29 Jan 2009 6:33pm

@Pascale: Vous êtes toujours les bienvenus - pluie ou soleil -!

Diane Schuller from Hythe, Canada

very interesting street scene. That tree in the far left down the street is incredibly interesting -- all those twists in the trunk and how the red lights it up.

29 Jan 2009 6:37pm

@Diane Schuller: Thanks for the visit Diane. That tree effect for the most part - wouldn't have happened had it not been raining.

alex centrella from California, United States

fantastic city shot, i love that place !

29 Jan 2009 6:40pm

Paco Díaz from Palma de Mallorca, Spain

Very good, Stephen, I like the ambience of this streets by night, everybody looks happy then.
I like also the chess b/w of the street (I don't know how to say that combination of stones in english, but you understand me, isn't it?.
Great series.

29 Jan 2009 6:56pm

@Paco Díaz: Thanks, Paco - you are looking at, "The checkered pattern of the sidewalk." - and I agree, wet with the reflections - it adds a lot. (chess or checkers - English is a dog of a language)

Shrig from Washington, D.C., United States

I love how the people have been incorporated into this shot. There are those 3 people standing posing for your shot (or who look like they are), the people out on the sidewalk looking like ghosts walking by, the people at the table some are talking (again, in ghost form) while one girl is looking at you. This is a great, great shot. It tells such a cool story.

29 Jan 2009 7:01pm

@Shrig: Thanks, my friend.

Rui from Leiria, Portugal

I love how you deal with your night shots and the way you process the color.
This one in particular is a winner. The people (those 3 girls posing are the bonus), the perspective and the colors. Then, taking advantage of the wet floor, how the light is reflected on the pavement, adding even more color to this superb composition.

29 Jan 2009 7:22pm

Scott Schilling from San Martin, United States

This is a wonderful image - and I love the rain and wet pavement - it has excitement and warmth - makes me want to get in the car and drive up to the City for dinner! The people smiling adds an additional feeling of warmth to the City scene.

29 Jan 2009 8:09pm

@Scott Schilling: Well - we are waiting...

mo.langel from Courtelary, Switzerland

Magnifique composition, très belle lumière de nuit, excellent photo

29 Jan 2009 8:15pm

@mo.langel: Thank you for the kind words.

Calusarus from St Sorlin en Valloire, France

A place I'd like to go to eat with some friends. And the blurry people add something of fantastic here

29 Jan 2009 8:18pm

@Calusarus: Enough wine, and we all get blurry...

Alun Lambert from cheshire, United Kingdom

cool shot

29 Jan 2009 8:23pm

Don't know how I missed this yesterday. Are you getting a jump on the first Facebook challenge? Great shot. I love the red light reflected on the tree. Overall, the composition is great. Alot of detail inside the restaurant.
