Labor Day

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 1 September 2008 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

Today marks the end of this three day weekend in the United States - as we say farewell to summer...

Labor Day in Santa Cruz, California - part of The Wharf is in the foreground - just beyond the beach is the Boardwalk's 'Giant Dipper' roller coaster - and the lower coastal mountains set the background.

You captured Labor Day perfectly! Looks like a wooden roller coaster? My favorite ride of all times!

1 Sep 2008 10:37am

@Betty: Not just a wooden coaster - it is a great ride. The start is a plunge through a very tight "S" curve in total darkness! Once the coaster straightens out - you then see the 'light at the end of the tunnel' and the chain ahead that will pull you up to the top of the ride. Magnificent!

the multiplication of signs give a strange aspect of this summertime pic, very original point of view

All the fun of the beach and fair....! It's a great holiday shot, and I enjoyed looking through the zones, from the boardwalk, the beach, the fair and finally to the residential hills. Lovely.

What a beautiful capture, it's colorful, and there's so much to look at from the front to the back. Really great.

martineb from France

Incroyable ce monde!! petites fourmis multicolores!! Bien vu!

I totally agree with all of the comments made by Observing and Thomas Griffioen.I would add that I would love to see this shot in a much larger format than is possible on our screens.

We were there Friday through Sunday and boy was it packed, you must have shot this from the lighthouse I am guessing. Happy Labor Day!

2 Sep 2008 2:50am

@Tracy: I'm glad to hear you survived the throngs of humanity - and Happy Labor Day back at you. The photograph was taken along West Cliff Drive - which goes out to the lighthouse - but much closer to where it begins - next to those hotels above The Wharf.

What magnificent scenery. A little 'too populated, for my taste, beautiful definition, very good shot.

That's what I call a busy day. I like the different layers of this photo: pier legs, cars, crowd, funpark. Cool.
