Rainy Crossing

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 31 July 2008 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

The Bay Bridge into San Francisco on a wet evening.

[ photographer's notebook ]: I'm adding these thoughts in response to the comments you've written; I almost didn't post this image because I don't have any 'exif' data. It is however a cool capture - I'm grateful for all of the good feedback.

I was, indeed driving. As is frequently the case in photography - luck was a factor here. I set-up for the possibility of trying this before getting on the freeway. There was a break in the rain and no one was in my lane behind me. I shot from above the open sunroof with a Canon Powershot G2 - using that wonderful flip screen. The water droplets are from mist being stirred up by the cars ahead - on the UV filter. The traffic was moving very slowly and I was able to do this safely. My guess is ISO 400 f/2.0 for probably 0.6 seconds (+/-) and 1st curtain which was fine as the vehicles were moving away from the camera.

This is mad Stepehn, did you have the camera on the dash of the car? Was the shutter on 1st or 2nd curtain?

beautiful! amazing! beautiful! i remember as a kid holding my eyes open and kind of zoning out... in order to simply watch the lights wiz by on this bridge! it worked even better when the windows were wet such as this! :) this brings those wonderful and quirky feelings back! bravo!

@dj.tigersprout: Your comment reminds me that this is the energy I seek in my imagery - to recall the spirit of a child's exploration and wonder. Or, as Carter Blakemoore Smith always says, " be childlike and not childish."

Mirko Herzner from Mühlheim am Main, Germany

Wow. Amazing shot Stephen. Impressive how relatively sharp you captured the skyline with this much movement going on. Great one!

Very good image, Stephen, I like the lighting and the composition: the speed of vehicles on the bridge and the static lights of the skyline as background.

Belle photo avec peut-être de la chance, mais la technique est là, et j'aime le paradoxe entre le mouvement à gauche, et la fenêtre de statisme à droite ! (les flares ajoutent un +)

Nice picture with perhaps the chance, but the technique is there, and I like the paradox between the movement to the left, and the window of statism on the right! (flares add a +)

@Isao: - I really appreciate your comments andl ove the bilingual critiques. Thank you very much.

This is such a great dynamic image. The sharpness of the city skyline with the blur on the bridge is so cool!

I'm surprised by the sharpness in the skyline given how much movement there is in a car under these circumstances. I was trying to take some night photos from the back seat a while back I the process made me acutely aware of just how unstable a moving car is when you're using slow shutter speeds.
