' F ' Line at Dusk

Posted by
Stephen Phillips (San Francisco, United States) on 17 July 2008 in Transportation and Portfolio.

One of San Francisco's historic Trolley 'F'-Line Cars. There are currently 44 active cars with more currently being restored or awaiting restoration. This one - Car #1074 (Toronto) - is about to make its turn off of the Embarcadero - looping around into Market Street - before proceeding west outbound to its terminus at Castro. More information:

Sen. Diane Feinstein initiated bringing these wonderful cars to San Francisco while she was Mayor here in the late seventies. The Cable Cars are $5 with no transfers. These Trolly Cars will get you to the same area for a buck-and-a-half - and you can return or continue on with a transfer for the next two hours. Quite a deal and lots of fun. Don't miss riding one of the bright orange Italian cars. So tiny. And the controls look like a beautiful brass espresso machine.

Great shot! This say "SF" straight away. Great angle that makes excellent use of the rails for foreground interest. Good work Stephen! (look out for one from Milan from me in the next few days)

@Ted: We have a Milan car - and I have a photograph of it. My schedule is 'crazy -busy' just now, but I'll try to find time to find and post it.

Beautiful light and DOF, I love that you have shot this from such a low perspective, it is a very inviting image and despite it being a street image, it leaves me with a very tranquil feeling, so well captured Stephen!

@Kylie Greenan: Thanks, Kylie.

A warm and interesting image. I grew up in Toronto and it has similar trolleys so I could associate with riding one of these.

Beautiful shot with difficult light conditions here. How long did you expose this one?

17 Jul 2008 6:17am

@Mirko Herzner: Hi, Mirko --- this was pushing the limits of my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 image stabilized lens. I was using a monopod with the IS in mode 1. ISO 400 - f/2.8 at 1/40th sec.
