Driving Along the Lost Coast

Mattole Road - Humboldt County Route 211 - is the amazing drive that actually runs along a small section of the lost coast of California.

I'd mentioned this part of California a few weeks back. It is a roughly 96 kilometer (60 mile) section of the california coast that has (with one exception) not been developed. This is the only road that traverses a small section of the beaches along a remote part of that coastline.

There are no towns or services along this section of beach. Just a couple of farms. The photograph here is of the hills north of the coastal section. Below is the Bear River flowing into the Pacific just below a few houses that form the settlement of Capetown, California.
