Observing from West Cheshire, United KingdomSuperb view.... I love the old tramcar, would this be approaching the city center..? Very good shot Stephen..! 16 Jan 2009 5:20am @Observing: Hi there, Mike. The telephoto really distorts location in the shot - but you're close! Where I am standing is actually about 4 blocks south and 4 blocks west of the western edge of Civic Center. I am on Market Street as it climbs into Eureka Valley and the Castro area. (Good job, Mike - when were you last here?) Alun Lambert from cheshire, United KingdomA classic view of San Francisco, nice one 16 Jan 2009 6:33am Paco Díaz from SpainGood perspective and light, Stephen, I remember this tramway and the zone of the image. 16 Jan 2009 6:49am Betty from New Jersey, United StatesI love the beautiful, bright sunshine... which I miss so much right now! Great colors and composition! 16 Jan 2009 10:40am @Betty: I'll confess, Betty - this is why I am FROM the Washington, D.C. area. Yesterday I was across the bay - wearing a Hawaiian shirt - having a picnic with friends in the Berkeley Rose Garden where it was 73°. The down side is that we've had almost no rain through December and so far through January - our two wettest months in a five month rainy season. This would create our third year of drought. I may be begging you to send a case of water. Rui from Leiria, PortugalI'm loving this SF series. Well... I think I'll have to put it in my "Places to visit" note. 16 Jan 2009 11:24am Marcie from United StatesLove the view of the clocktower in the distance. Fun for me to see these..as my son is now living there! 16 Jan 2009 12:54pm @Marcie: That would be our Ferry Building along the Embarcadero. What is your son doing? MontereyJohn from Salinas, California, United StatesI've ridden that trolley! Fun capture with the Ferry Building in the background. Nice catch. 16 Jan 2009 3:24pm Anthony Lambert from Bielefeld, GermanyYou just can´t go wrong in San fransisco I´m thinking. So much to photograph,it´s unbelievable !! 16 Jan 2009 4:06pm Chris from South Jersey, United Statesreally great shot - I love how the zoom compresses the city and keeps so much of the street in one shot.... 16 Jan 2009 5:01pm EYES WIDE SHUT from The library of my soul, United KingdomA wonderful scene, and the tramcar is simply fantastic. Superbly observed, Stephen and on my list of places I have to visit 16 Jan 2009 5:13pm Viewfinder from Bradenton, United States;-) I feel as if I need to hold on; the angle of tilt wants to pull me downhill. Great capture. 16 Jan 2009 5:16pm @Viewfinder: Steady, lad - steady.... Calusarus from St Sorlin en Valloire, FranceBeautiful shot, of a very nice city… 16 Jan 2009 6:23pm k@ from Paris, FranceThis image too dances ! Can hear some happy music as the tram climbs down ! This one is so great, I miss them* 16 Jan 2009 7:17pm @k@: U. S. Senator Diane Feinstein - back when she was mayor of San Francisco - began this program. We've collected these 'Trolley Cars' from all over the world. None from Paris, so far as I know. We are running cars from England, Switzerland, Italy, India, Canada, and Mexico - as well as many major cities within this country. sherri from Little Rock, Arkansas, United StatesI love this. The trolley looks a lot like the old city buses we had in Dayton when I was growing up. The streets of San Fransisco...corny, huh?, but that's what I thought of. 16 Jan 2009 7:49pm Helma from Tehran, IranReally beautiful shot with best prespective .. very nice veiw! 16 Jan 2009 7:54pm Scott Schilling from San Martin, United StatesStephen, great shot - You must be fast - I fear for your life in some of these photos! The red lights definitely make me feel like I am in the City! Also, I agree with your comments on our winter so far - the driest I have seen - not good! 16 Jan 2009 8:43pm @Scott Schilling: Thanks for the concern, Scott. Believe me - I am no dare-devil. I've actually been the safety supervisor at two companies when I was younger. I'm usually pretty good at assessing that aspect first when preparing a shoot. Alphons from Kaatsheuvel, NetherlandsWhat I imagine of San Francisco: sun, palmtrees, trams, slopes. Fine capture. 16 Jan 2009 9:39pm JJ from Jersey City, United StatesAnother great shot in this series, this really captures what I always imagine seeing there, I wish our office was over there, I am really not a winter person 17 Jan 2009 1:21am @JJ: Twenty winters in the Washington, D.C. area is what has seen me here for the past thirty-nine. hugo poon from hong kong, Hong KongHow inviting! Wonderful perspective... enjoy being drawn into it, travelling along the street until reaching the clocktower... Thanks. 17 Jan 2009 2:16am @hugo poon: Bless you, Hugo - you too! John Maslowski from Dallas, PA, United StatesBeautiful view, love the sun shining in this picture. Right now it's -8 degrees F and I could use the warmth felt in this shot. Are those palm trees? What a gorgeous city you live in Stephen, great capture! 17 Jan 2009 4:12am @John Maslowski: Brrrr. And, yes John - many Palm Trees. All of Dolores Street; all of outer Market Street; and the entire Embarcadero, from Fisherman's Wharf to the ball park. Mike from Lichfield, United KingdomI don't remember seeing any trams like that. They haven't gone and replaced all the old ones have they? 17 Jan 2009 7:26am @Mike: Not at all Mike. These are Trolley Cars that run off electricity from the overhead wires. The Cable Cars actually grab a cable running below the street surface. Cable Cars are each a protected National Historic Site - the only moving objects to bare that distinction. All of the modern light rail vehicles run under Market Street and then into the outlying neighborhoods. This line - made up of old streetcars from all over the U.S.and the world - serves the surface of Market Street - from the Castro to The Ferry Building. Here they turn north along The Embarcadero and run through all of Fisherman's Wharf. A great ride that takes much pressure off the overburdened Cable Cars (at less than a third the price) - All of the cars are painted and restored reflecting where they served - from Milan, Italy to Kansas City. We even have "A Streetcar named 'Desire' " - from New Orleans. U.S. Senator Diane Fienstein initiated this vision when she was mayor of San Francisco (1978 - 1984). Lorraine from Gatineau, CanadaI love this so so much, the only reason I didn't drop in was 'cause I was kicked out...arrrghhh but this ah San Francisco, I sure do love it ;) 17 Jan 2009 2:21pm Suzanne from Huntington Bch, CA, United StatesBeautiful shot, Stephen. You are creating an outstanding travelogue here. 19 Jan 2009 3:34am melodia from ffm, Germanya street scene how i love it. i have to see these american up-and-down-hill-streets some day! :) 22 Jan 2009 7:52pm |
